Oh lovely. This is when everyone is the Christian Music industry goes crazy. Awards ceremonies, a thousand free concerts a night and "ego stroking". I think I use to want to deny it, but now I can't help but see it: Christian Music is no better than secular music. I'm not specifically talking about lyrical content, but I'm also including artistic quality and artist attitudes all together.
Alot of what you hear (which happens to be 90% Third Day, Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns and Mercy Me) isn't much more than rehashed hymns, remixed covers that every other word has to be Jesus, every song sounds the same (even every artists sounds like the other) and sometimes the songs that sound different don't hold any musical substance, just the same riff/chord progression on repeat.
Secular music is like that too. Most of the bands look/sound the same, every other word is "for unlawful carnal knowledge" and you hear the same "mega-bands" over and over.
I like something that Sam bancroft said at CIA Summit this year. Essentially (or what I got from it) is that we as Christians should be able be the most creative artists, being children of The Creator. We shouldn't strive to sound like this or that band, but have our own unique sounds. That doesn't mean rejecting an influence, just don't try to sound like so and so.
I like when you listen to a CD (Todd Agnew's "Grace Like Rain" for example) and each song sounds almost like a different band. Each song has it's own feel, it's own style. Each song is a completely different work, yet the whole album flows together in such a way, you know it's the same artist.
Call it a soapbox if you wish, but I always felt that one you become a musician, not someone that just knows a few cords or took band in school, but someone that actually eats, sleeps, breathes music and wants nothing more than to just play... Once you achieve that level of enthusiasm, you're ruined. You can't just sit back and listen to the radio or a CD. You're always critiquing, commenting, judging. Pretty much everything this entry has done.
Oh well... That's just me.
Also, I can't wait to get over to Rocketown tonight. I wanna see Superchic[k].
